钱金玉做松江县的千总官，性情刚毅果敢，崇尚廉洁的气节。道光壬寅年间(1842年)鸦片战争爆发。钱金玉正在休假回乡探亲，听到消息，立即收拾行装动身。他的亲友阻止他说：“战事正紧急，是祸是福不可知晓，您正在休假，上级官员又没有文件催促您前去，为什么急急忙忙地回去呢?”钱金玉不听，回到吴淞口后，就跟从军队守卫西炮台，和士兵一起吃饭睡觉，一起行动，他们用努力作战的话相互勉励。到了东炮台陷落后，枪弹炮弹全都落到西炮台。钱金玉奋勇指挥战斗，浴血奋战几个小时，左臂中了三弹，却毫不后退。他身边的士兵哭着说：“您有老母亲在，不能死。”钱金玉笑着辞谢说：“哪里有享受国家俸禄却在国家有难时逃避的道理呢?希望你不要为我母亲担心。”不久，一颗枪弹飞来，击中了左胸，他于是倒下了。在临死的时候，他还大呼“卖国贼害了国家”而不停。
